In March of 1996, Comet Hyakutake sailed high over Ashton Observatory. The first photo above shows a view of the night sky, looking northwest over the observatory domes, with Venus and the Pleiades to the left side and Comet Hyakutake to the right side. The second photo shows almost the same view and field of stars one year later, as Comet Hale-Bopp swept through the inner solar system past Earth. As you can see, Venus, being a planet and not a star, has changed it's position in the night sky. In fact, Venus was behind the Sun and not visible by March of 1997, when Hale-Bopp came to visit.
