Iowa has all four species of the Silphium genus within our boundaries. Silphium laciniatum, Silphium perfoliatum, Silphium integrifolium, and Silphium terebinthinaceum. I had taken pictures of Compass Plant, Cup Plant, and Rosin Weed but I had only seen Prairie Dock once down in southern Iowa when I didn't have a camera with me. I finally ran across some this summer out by Redfield when it was somewhat past it's prime for the blossoms. I grabbed a couple of shots anyway and I hope to get out there next summer when it is in it's best blooming stage for some better shots.
