Here are the three members of the Gentianaceae family that I have found and photographed in Iowa so far. The first, Bottle Gentian, was in a small area about a mile south of Engledinger Marsh, on the Jasper County side of the gravel road. There are also populations of Nodding Ladies Tresses and Turtlehead in this area. The second Gentian shown, Downey Gentian, was blooming last week in a small cemetary north of Maxwell, Iowa. It has to be one of the most beautiful of Iowa's wildflowers. The bottom example, White Prairie Gentian, or Creamy Gentian as some people call it, came from a small wet area, out in a large tract of timber, west of Madrid Iowa, As you travel west out of Madrid on Hwy. 210, there is also a small population, mainly in the south road ditch. I have also seen White Prairie Gentian, at woods' edge areas, along the Des Moines River, between Boone and Ft. Dodge.
